Awards & Recognition

Coconut Contracting is proud to be recognized by some of the most respected organizations in the business for our work.

Jill Dahlin Courtyard at the MIM

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Excellence for Commercial Redesign Under $15,000

Upon our initial visit to the MIM, the site was covered with overgrown aloe plants that were pruned poorly, giving the courtyard an old, unkempt appearance. There was little variation in color or texture with regards to the plant palette. Inviting, it was not.
Coconut Contracting was asked to develop a new planting plan that included much more color, as well as plants that would attract hummingbirds. To accomplish these goals, we planted Salvia Greggii, Salvia Leucantha and Orange Jubilee. We also brought in Bear Grass to add some much-needed texture to the area. We removed many of the aloes, as well as other plants that were either overgrown or simply didn’t fit with the new plan.
We’re happy to report that since the completion of the project, hummingbirds have already built two nests in the courtyard’s Oak trees.

The Dunn Residence

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Distinction for Single Family Residential Installation $40,001 – $55,000

The front yard of the Dunn Residence was neglected for nearly 40 years. It had a ¼” minus, decomposed granite “driveway” that had no available access to the garage. Improper and poor location of mounding led to damaged vehicles as well as damaged landscaping. Old and neglected plants hadn’t seen a functioning irrigation system in a very long time.

We came in with a comprehensive plan to grade the entire front of the property and provide access to the garage. The plan also included a full lighting design, planting design and irrigation system. The custom irrigation system placed trees on a separate valve than the shrubs, and the turf valves feeding approximately 500 square feet.

We used various species of cactus and agave planted in clusters, nestled into boulders and surrounded by complimentary plants. Varying vegetative textures were always thought of and utilized throughout the space. The hard work and planning paid off, producing a beautiful and functional front yard.

The Baretto Residence

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Excellence for Residential Installation Under $25,000

This project challenged our team to be creative as our client had some old bricks and other materials that he wanted to use on the project. His backyard was somewhat small, so he wanted to make the yard more usable. We extended his property walls and enclosed a good portion of his front yard. The client now has a fully-enclosed front courtyard that is connected without obstruction to the backyard. Best of all, we were able to use his old bricks along with some new pavers as well.

The Kaplan Residence

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Excellence for Single Family Residential $50,001 – $70,000

This backyard had drainage issues when we first surveyed the project. Our team re-graded the yard and installed a completely new landscape, which included an extended travertine patio, custom masonry BBQ and a fire pit.

About a year after the initial install, a car crashed through the back wall!  As a result, we were commissioned to go back in and repair the lawn area, extended patio and plant replacements.

The Giving Tree Patio - Jewish Community Center

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Excellence for Commercial Installation Under $50,000

As a member of the Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center, this was a very special project to me. The JCC board provided free rein to design what I felt would be most impactful for a new seating and gathering space at the entrance of the facility.

I was given a quote from the book “The Giving Tree” that served as inspiration for my design. The quote and project location made everything come together quite easily.

In order to help show the shape of the Star of David, multiple varieties of colors of concrete pavers were used. We used Scabos travertine to cap the benches and LED lights throughout the project.

Pardes Soccer Fields

Arizona Excellence in Landscaping Awards –
Award of Excellence for Single Family Residential $50,001 – $70,000

This project was funded by the United States Department of Homeland Security. Coconut Contracting was tasked with securing the fields from unwanted vehicular traffic. Being that this is a community center and community soccer fields, the idea of simply installing bollards all the way around was not aesthetically pleasing. By using a combination of strategically placed large surface boulders, solid fill masonry benches with travertine caps and traffic bollards, we were able to develop a plan that not only achieved the primary goal of security, but also allows people to sit and enjoy the fields.
